  1. 1. OK, Gappiya has youtube to do his stuff. Theatrical Cinema, TV, Youtube are different formats and Chinthana's ongoing attempt to snatch cinema halls for Youtubers stems from his own nostalgia about cinema. Cinema needs works that go with its own format, something worth the big screen, details, darkness, concentration, isolation etc. Online videos define its form and content with own restrictions and liberties and it needs to find its own artistic depth. Let them influenced by each other (like in TV and Cinema), but don't suggest cinema should be looted by new mediums. So stop always calling for censorship according to your preferences.

    2. Why taxes on foreign cinema? You suggest censorship again and want to feed us with crap we create inside? Calling for protection from authority? Ha! That's what you aim ultimately! Funny and treacherous !

    3. Needs to protect the new liberties you won with this government, but not the government and its pathetic treacheries. Silence is always a tacit agreement. Always needs to keep protesting. Its not to say the previous government is better than this, but to keep continuing the struggle. Saying this is not all we fought for is far better than saying this is good enough. This freedom is a fleeting masquerade!

    1. I know there is always a resistance when something new and challenging is brought to the table. And it is always positive to have counter arguments and opinions since it will broaden the understanding. First of all what do you define as a film? Till now in our country it's something which will be coming in celluloid and screened only in theatres. A few years ago there was a similar mindset against digital cameras. They said films will then be 'television bullshit'. They argued that film will end with it, and there can be no film done without 35mm. But now? Everyone is lining up to shoot with the latest digital equipment. And even this writer easily agrees to digital cinema but is still stuck with the limitation of the theatrical system. There should be a non theatrical cinema too. That’s my argument. And in my view that will be the cinema which defines the future of this medium. Theatrical or non theatrical, everything which falls to the feature film category should be recognized as films. You can decide where these films are going to be screened according to audience demand. But not according to the feudal system of 'being theatrical is the absolute' mindset. So if you want to enjoy films in theatres, that’s fine. But how can you define which films are going in there and not? It is up to the audience finally. Even gappiya can be a feature film and screened in big theatres. Films with only depths, silences, aesthetics..That era is long gone.
And taxing is not censoring. It is the most democratic way to protect an industry from monopolies and open new grounds to new players which will be the real innovations for future. And don’t tell me that all these imported films are good. Tell me any good film that runs in theatres by now which can be considered as good? They are importing any shit and make a big marketing haho. Please don’t misunderstand or misinterpret that foreign films are demanded by the majority of the country. It is still Sri Lankan films which are preferred by the majority of this country, just because the Cinema's in Colombo hits houseful on weekends for films like Jurassic world does not mean that reflects what the whole country wants. Only a niche audience which you too may belong to, will stick around one or two theatres and prioritize watching foreign movies. For example, Siri Parakum was a huge hit which cannot be compared to performance of any imported film here. In any country there is a tax system which will protect the domestic industries from big multi nationals. I'm in total agreement that these films should come here and there should be a good competition. But it should be on legitimate and fair grounds, away from greasy monopolies. In television when shitty hindi dramas took up all the space this taxing system worked for better outcome and ultimately made way for local artists to come out with better productions. Now Sri Lankans love mega dramas made here than the dramas coming from India. I'm not talking about art house movies here. They should surely be screened for appropriate audiences in mini theatres. But we should encourage our commercial film makers and give them a fair chance to fight with big budget movies from big studios.
If you take a closer look, its not me who's trying to feed you bullshit by promoting screening mediums for all type of films, you're already eating up bullshit fed to you so lovingly by a few profit making entities.. So wake up and get real!

    2. Thank you for this reasonable and better thought reply!

Now this first paragraph of the comment speaks better than the last paragraph of your article "පරණ සිනමාවට යන්න කියන මේ මොහොතේ ". If we all can happily agree that all types of films should exist and allowed, that's great! It is also nice if calling for a new cinema is not a call to annihilate other types of cinema, a sense, which some of your writings may unfortunately imply, as this line testifies.

As you say, technology has already given us the alternatives to preserve the experience of ‘big screen+dark hall’ format with home theatres and other mini versions. So I should not be worried about what will happen to the unique feel of original cinema:) If you want to use the nostalgic word 'Cinema' for all types of films I can't object to it. However, I think we should have a name for big screen+dark hall films, which is a unique form of spectatorship, because always the way of consumption affects the content and form.

The second paragraph is about the entertaining business and how it should be regulated. Definitely the business of cinema seems regulated through the demand of 'audience', only if you think that this mechanism is innocent. However, I think that theatres are big investments and they and their content are regulated by the investors for profit. They will manipulate the market and decide to use Sri Lankan productions over foreign ones if they are more profitable. You too have wisely showed here that creating demands in the current context won’t happen innocently as we wish (you perhaps know this better as a person in advertising), and so are the taxing systems. What I say is rather than letting our own ‘philanthropic’ governing bodies (corrupt politicians, theatre owners etc.) to control it by tax systems, keeping it as it is (opened to international competition) may be more beneficial.

Under this context, perhaps the innovative cinema today survive because of the new technology, digital cinema (and festivals to a certain degree.) and cinephiles who brave the given conditions. There are innovative ones in the mainstream too, but they are also benefited by the above factors than the commercial system itself.

Finally apologise me for my well-intended polemic and pretentious tone in the previous comment that provoked you to write this nice reply, especially with the witty last paragraph:)

    3. And Gappiya won’t be allowed to the commercial theatre cinema if he is not profitable. If he tries to be profitable, Gappiya will be made to a pretentious gold fish, something that almost happened to Gappiya when some brands tried to market him (newspapers, advertising etc.) That is what I meant by leaving him to new mediums, which are not decisively dependent on profits or any other censorship, including your so-called well-intended tax systems. That is the beauty of new digital mediums. It is offering us a certain degree of independence from profit-based capitalism. The innovative contents of new media and uniqueness of cinema are defined by its own form, format, restrictions and liberties. Therefore, ‘Gappiya’ never will be a feature film. If ‘Gappiya’ a feature film…. you will see him dead out of the tank.

  2. The above comment is not to negate the positive things this article put forward: fighting for digital, tyranny of theatre businesses, Jackson's hidden agenda etc.

However, our situation is not just a trading Chaplin for Hitler. No way you can apply Chaplin's all nuances (immensely positive) with this government at all. This is trading puppets for Hitler, which we don't know yet who the puppeteer is.

    1. I meant people led by new mediums orchestrated and acted as puppeteers in the election and we still do not know who snatched the threads from us afterwards. So we can't say that the dance is what we anticipated :) It might take a dramatic turn suddenly if we don't find threads again and hold them tightly! Hurry up Chinthana :)
